Ornamental metal fences keep a view open: a lake or trail behind the house, a front yard, a pool. Several planned communities around Fulshear require open fencing on lots that back to water or open space, and Brookshire's code requires front-yard fences over 4 feet to be at least 75 percent open.
Steel or aluminum
Aluminum does not rust and is the usual pick for pools. Steel (often called wrought iron) is heavier and stronger, good for drive gates and security. Both come in heights and picket styles that suit HOA rules and pool codes.
Mixing metal and wood
A privacy fence along the sides with a metal section at the back, or a wood fence ending at an iron gate, as on the Cross Creek Ranch job on our wood fence page. Check that your guidelines allow the combination.

Questions we hear
Is aluminum or steel better for a pool?
Aluminum is the common choice because it does not rust. Either can meet pool barrier rules with the right height, spacing and self-closing gates.
Do you build metal fences in Richmond?
